The physical therapy approach to lower back pain is unique in that the aim is to revive the acute pain and then educate and show you how to prevent this from coming on again.
There are 6 main types of back pain which all required a different approach. It is a little like treating abdominal pain differently depending on if it is the appendix or an ulcer. Each type of back pain is called a syndrome and is classified depending on the presentation of what makes the pain worse or better. These syndromes are:
-
Derangement syndrome
-
Dysfunction syndrome
-
Combination syndrome
-
Stenosis syndrome
-
Instability syndrome
-
Pelvic Girdle syndrome
Each of these presents with different signs and symptoms and need to be treated with these differences in mind. The treatment may include manual therapy, which is used to restore normal joint mobility in addition to decreasing pain. This may be enhanced by exercises specific to the syndrome you are complaining of. A home exercise program will be given once the therapist is sure that they are on the right track.
It is important to keep your life as consistent a possible during treatment, so any change that occurs can be attributed to the treatment and changes made with these in mind.
Look at the following syndromes and you may be able to see what you are.
