Physical Therapy

The Orthopedic Institute of Michigan offers comprehensive care for musculoskeletal conditions and injuries, integrating physical therapy into both conservative management and post-surgical care. For patient convenience, physical therapy services are provided within the same suite, facilitating excellent communication between orthopedic surgeons and physical therapists. This collaboration is enhanced by therapists’ access to digital radiographs and surgical notes, allowing for tailored and progressive treatment plans.

Frequently Asked Questions About Our Physical Therapy Clinic

Do I need a prescription to attend therapy?

Yes, the State of Michigan requires a written prescription from a physician for physical therapy treatment. The prescription must include the patient’s name, diagnosis, treatment frequency and duration, and be signed and dated by the physician. Rubber-stamped signatures are not legally acceptable.

Will my insurance cover physical therapy?

Most insurance plans offer some level of coverage for physical therapy, though the extent varies by provider. As a courtesy, the clinic verifies insurance coverage for physical therapy; however, this verification is not a guarantee of payment. Patients are encouraged to contact their insurance provider for specific plan details.

What if I have a copay?

Insurance plans may require a fixed dollar amount or a percentage as a copay. The clinic strives to inform patients of the amount due, with payment expected at the time of service unless other arrangements are made. Patients should speak with the receptionist to discuss alternative payment options.

What are the office hours for physical therapy?

The clinic operates during the following hours:

Monday: 7:00 am – 8:00 pm
Tuesday: 8:00 am – 8:00 pm
Wednesday: 7:00 am – 5:00 pm
Thursday: 8:00 am – 8:00 pm
Friday: 7:00 am – 5:00 pm
Saturday: 9:00 am – 12:00 pm (appointments scheduled sequentially)

The last appointment is scheduled one hour before closing. Depending on insurance, there may be restrictions on available hours for therapy.

What should I bring to my first physical therapy appointment?

Patients should bring their physician’s prescription, insurance card, and any completed paperwork to the initial appointment.

What should I wear?

Appropriate attire includes:

Shorts for knee, hip, or ankle treatments
A loose shirt for neck or shoulder treatments
Suitable footwear for exercise

How long will each session last?

Sessions typically last between 45 minutes to one hour, depending on the specific injury.

Can my children accompany me during treatment?

No. Due to the open nature of the clinic, only patients are allowed in the treatment area. Parents or guardians may accompany minor patients, but siblings are not permitted in the treatment area.

Can I schedule all my appointments at once?

No. Appointments are scheduled one week at a time to accommodate new patients. Patients are advised to call on Monday to schedule appointments for the following week.

Can I have physical therapy on the same day as my OIM physician appointment?

Yes. Most insurance plans allow for same-day physical therapy and physician appointments. It is recommended to schedule the physical therapy appointment first.

I just received my bill and it is several pages long. Why?

The clinic no longer sends separate bills for physical therapy and physician services, resulting in a consolidated, multi-page bill.

Who do I contact if I have a question about my bill?

For billing inquiries, please contact the billing department at 734-943-2701.
